Poor in Spirit

Studying: Matthew 8-10
Thoughts: Good

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 5:3

Emptiness without hope is miserable, but emptiness with hopeful expectation can be most exciting. An artist may look at a blank canvas and see potential, a fresh place to begin a new work. An empty glass may be a glass about to be refilled with something refreshing. One who is "poor in spirit" is one who is emptied of self, looking only to God in complete dependence for everything. This kind of person is "blessed" because his hope is in God and not in himself. The Apostle Paul echoes this sentiment when he says "For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 12:10b)
